maine coons!

their predominant traits: maine coons are very large, and often called "gentle giants". they have long, water resistant, and thick coats, and a lengthy, fluffy tail. they shed year round and surprisingly enjoy water/are interested in it. maine coons are not considered a talkative breed, they chirp and trill, but not really meow. they are sweet, intelligent (they used to be utilized as a working cat breed), friendly, and need a moderate amount of human interaction. they do well with families, as they love each member of the family about the same and don't usually pick favorites.

common health concerns: a maine coon's lifespan is 12-15 years, and the following are some common health issues for the breed...

  • hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • hip dysplasia
  • spinal muscular atrophy
  • ear infections, because their large ears and tufted fur can trap dirt, germs, and moisture
  • polycystic kidney disease

grooming and maintenance:

  • it is recommended to brush 3 or more times a week to prevent matting and hairballs and to help with shedding.
  • they need baths every few months.
  • most maine coons are playful their whole lives, not just while they’re kittens, and some can even play fetch or go on walks on a leash.
  • also, get them interactive toys and things to climb(cat furniture), and possibly let them swim.
  • brush their teeth at least once a week.
  • their diets should be high in protein and include omega-3 to maintain healthy joints, preventing/slowing predisposed conditions like hip dysplasia.
  • clean their ears as needed, whenever dirt or wax buildup is noticeable.
  • trim your maine coon's nails regularly.
