their predominant traits: chihuahuas visually are very small, short, and skinny, with perky ears, round head, and large eyes, however they have spunky “big dog” personalities. they are sassy, barky, and lap dogs. they are relatively easy to train because they are smart and eager to please, and they also can easily develop separation anxiety. there are two types of chihuahas, smooth haired and long haired. the smooth (short) haired ones become cold easily, and can wear dog sweaters! a downside to chihuahuas is that they are not the most suitable for families with younger children or families with large dogs due to their small size.

common health concerns: their lifespan is 14-16 years, and the following are some common health issues for the breed...

• hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
• collapsing trachea
• heart diseases such as DMV and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
• luxating patella
• patent ductus arteriosus
• dental disease, due to overcrowding of their small mouths
• epilepsy
• eye problems like glaucoma, chronic dry eyes, and cataracts
• bladder stones due to their bodies being small, and their bladders extremely small
• hydrocephalus because of their head shape

grooming and maintenance:

• they don’t require much exercise since they’re so small, short walks and some play will work.
• chihuahuas need their nails trimmed and to be bathed once a month.
• their teeth should be brushed 3-4 times a week.
• check their ears every week and clean them as needed.
• brush their coat once every 1-2 weeks for a smooth haired chihuahuas, and at least twice a week for long haired.
