their predominant traits: these cats are easy going, independent, easily trainable, strong hunting instinct, intelligent, playful, and patient. american shorthairs are low maintenance and very adaptable, and are okay with other cats, dogs, and children. this breed has muscular bodies, thick, hard textured coats, and are medium sized. they shed their winter undercoat during spring, and shed lightly in fall as well.

common health concerns: an american shorthair's lifespan is 15-20 years, and the following are some common health issues for the breed...

• hyperthyroidism
• deafness
• allergies to things like pollen, mold, or dust
• hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
• kidney issues like Polycystic Kidney Disease
• arterial thromboembolism
• diabetes

grooming and maintenance:

• a quick, 1-2 times per week brush helps keep their shedding manageable.
• brush their teeth once a week.
• american shorthairs love to play, such as with toy mice and cat trees, and are easy to train with a reward system.
• clean their ears whenever you might notice any buildup.
• they only really need baths when they’ve actually become dirty.
• trim an american shorthair's nails regularly.
